Meaford Council Turns Down Additional Library Funds

Meaford | by Bayshore News Staff

Council will be putting $290,000 from the Library Expansion Reserve into the Bridge Fund Reserve

More funding will be put towards bridges in the Municipality of Meaford.

A 2018 budget surplus of around $290,000 has been moved to the Bridge Reserve Fund after a motion put forward by Deputy Mayor Shirley Keaveney at a recent meeting.

This decision prompted some debate between Deputy Mayor Keaveney and Councilor Ross Kentner. Kentner felt the funds should be put into the Library Expansion Fund. Originally Keaveney wanted to see the funds allocated to a stretch of road along Concession 2.
After some discussion Council chose to move the money into the Bridge Reserve Fund by a vote of 4-3.

Keaveney was pleased by this decision saying "we have many bridges that are closed or will soon be forced too. These are often in agricultural areas. It's important to recognize the impact that closing bridges have on our farms and the toll heavy equipment crossing them can take over time."

Council will discuss in the future the best use of this funding. For Keaveney looking at bridges 21 and 22 near Bognor will be a topic put forward.
