Health Care Changes Could Affect Local Hospitals

Grey Bruce | by John Divinski

South Bruce Grey Health Centre discusses what Ontario Health Teams could mean locally.

Bill 74, the People's Health Care Act, introduced in the legislature on February 26th, is likely going to have a big impact on the South Bruce Grey Health Centre.

The bill could result in significant changes to the Ontario Health Care System.

In his report to the SBGHC Board of Directors (MAR 6), Interim CAO Michael Barrett says if the draft legislation is approved, it would see the creation of Ontario Health.

It also proposes the creation of Ontario Health Teams and Barrett expects lots of talk about what the "teams" should look like and how big a region it should cover.

The plan would bring together health providers like hospitals, long term care home and primary care as a connected organization serving one geographic area, so the patient is not being handed off to different groups but receiving all their care under one roof.

Barrett says the direction is very positive but the implementation is very challenging because health care is a big system in Ontario.

SBGHC administers four hospitals in Walkerton, Kincardine, Durham and Chesley.
