Public Health Grey Bruce Holding Drop-in Immunization Clinics

Grey Bruce | by Claire McCormack

Clinics are being held all week for people to get up to date on their vaccinations.

Public Health Grey Bruce is offering free immunizations all week in Owen Sound during March Break.

Public Health Nurse Sandy Rennick says anyone can drop by the Health Unit building in Owen Sound (101 17th Street East) this week (March 11-15) from 10a.m. to 3 p.m. where public health nurses will be on hand to administer vaccines. No appointment is needed.

There is also a clinic set for Thursday at the Walkerton hospital which is by appointment. Call 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456, press 2.

Rennick says the clinics are useful for people who don't have family doctors, but are open to anyone.

Meanwhile, Suspension notices have gone out for 411 students in Grey Bruce which requires parents to provide proof of immunization for their child. The deadline is March 26th.

Students require proof of immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, meningococcal disease, whooping cough, and for children born in 2010 or later, chickenpox (Varicella).

Vaccine Preventable Diseases Program Manager Sarah Ellis says "We haven't seen a case of measles reported in Grey Bruce since 1996 and the last case of mumps was in 2001."

Ellis says parents are responsible for reporting their child’s immunizations to Public Health.

She notes, if they choose to exempt their child from immunizations for non-medical reasons, an education session with a Public Health Nurse is required.

Sandy Rennick is that nurse, locally and says vaccines save lives. She says the myth of Autism as a result of vaccination has been debunked dozens of times, "It's kind of perplexing because it started back in 1998 with a study that has been debunked multiple times since then, we're talking dozens of times since then, but once that seed of fear has been put into people's minds, it's really hard to work against that."

You can hear a full Open Line episode from AM 560 CFOS with Ellis and Rennick by playing the audio attached to the story.
