Pocket Dials Are On The Rise

Collingwood | by Catherine Thompson

Police in our area are reporting a rise in unintentional 911 calls.

Police in our area are reporting a rise in unintentional 911 calls.

Collingwood and the Blue Mountains OPP responded to over 1380 pocket dials in 2018.

That is an increase of almost 60 percent from 2017.

Police say that with smartphones with large exposed screens, an unintentional phone call can happen very easily with accidental contact with the screen or buttons. They say smart watches synced to a smartphone can also make a call that was unintended.

OPP remind you that for every false 911 call, precious seconds may be taken away from someone who really needs help.

Police say if you do place an accidental 911 call, stay on the line to let the emergency operator know it was a pocket dial. You are also urged to lock your keypad or buy a phone case with a full screen cover to prevent contact with the touch screen.
