Meaford Council Passes Motion to Save Rural Bridges

Meaford | by Ken Hashizume

Five will be saved from closure and two others will be reopened for farmers.

Meaford is going ahead to keep rural bridges open.

Council passed a motion from Councillor Steve Bartley.

You may recall Bartley gave notice that he would introduce a motion at Monday's meeting that would see the rural bridges stay open.

He cites that the farmers often use these bridge to transport things to and from town and they bring in money for the agriculture sector.

Bartley says Council made a mistake when it decided to accept a recommendation 2016 that saw three bridges closed and five more being slated to close.

He says by shutting down the bridges, what the Municipality did was shut down farming in Meaford.

Bartley says Council did the right thing in passing his motion adding agriculture is biggest business in Meaford.

He says it is the Municipality's responsibility to help out the farmers.

A previous staff report suggested closing the rural bridges in order to keep others opened and maintained.

Bartley says two of the bridges (20 and 21) are currently closed and they will look to reopen both of them in order to allow farmers to use them.
