'Giant Goalie Mask' Unveiling at Tom Thomson Art Gallery

Owen Sound | by Matt Hermiz

Reception goes tonight at 7 p.m.

A big night for art and hockey fans alike at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound.

Art Gallery curator Heather McLeese says a reception is being hosted by McArthur Tire at the Tom Thomson Gallery beginning at 7 p.m. for the unveiling of a Giant Goalie Mask that honours the sports and arts cultures of Owen Sound.

"It's all about celebrating the life of iconic artist Tom Thomson," McLeese says. "It celebrates the legacy and passion of local sports ... and what I'm excited about, the Owen Sound Attack is front and centre on this piece."

McLeese says the giant goalie mask is over six feet tall and four feet wide. It is made of fibreglass and has artwork airbrushed on it.

It comes to the Tom Thomson Art Gallery during the Saving Face: Art in Front of the Hockey Net exhibition which continues through the end of March.

McLeese says the sports-inspired exhibit has really been a hit since first opening in December.

"Normally, in winter we're a little bit slower, but it feels like the pace of summer at the gallery," she says. "People are coming in to see all of these different goalie masks."

Tonight's reception is a free event for anyone to attend.
