UPDATE: Man Killed in Caledon Village Explosion

Caledon | by Jill Young

A home exploded around 6 am Sunday in Caledon Village, a 54 year old man was killed.

The investigation continues today into a massive house explosion that happened yesterday in Caledon.

A 54 year old man, Joseph Westcott, has been identified as the victim.

Fire and police got the call around 6:20 am Sunday and found a home on Maple Grove Road in Caledon Village had been completely destroyed.

Officials began to evacuate about 35 residents in nearby homes and shut off the gas to the area as a precaution.

Several other homes were damaged from the explosion.

Access to the area, including access to Maple Grove Road, continues to be limited.

The Office of the Fire Marshal, Emergency Management, and Caledon OPP is helping in the investigation.

Mayor Allan Thompson offered condolences to the family of the victim and expressed his appreciation to all of the emergency workers and police for providing help.

Thompson says it's in times like these where the true strength of a community is tested and he's proud of the manner in which residents came together to help those in need.
