Owen Sound Police Debunk Social Media Post

Owen Sound | by Matt Hermiz

Police say post on Facebook describing attempted child abduction in the city that was widely shared, did not happen as reported

Owen Sound Police say a recent social media post that described an attempted child abduction in Owen Sound is not accurate.

Police say on Jan. 19, a descriptive and lengthy entry was published on Facebook regarding an attempted child abduction in the city by persons operating a black vehicle with tinted windows.

Police say the Facebook post had more than 400 interactions, 250 comments and was shared more than 1,300 times.

An investigation has been completed by the Criminal Investigations Branch into the allegations described in the online post, and police say it has been determined conclusively the incident did not happen as reported.

City police say the allocation of department resources was required to determine the online post's invalidity.

"Our priority is community safety," a police statement reads. "We remind the public that social media posts are difficult to fact check and in some cases the post may be unintentionally misconstrued."

Owen Sound Police say they did not receive any reports of attempted child abduction immediately prior to this Facebook post, or any after the investigation commenced.
