There are a number programs to help homeless people in Huron County, but an official says the issue continues to be largely hidden.
The County's Homelessness Programs Supervisor, Erin Schooley tells Country 104.9 News that the number of visible homeless across the county hasn't changed in the past year.
She says there were around 100 homeless people in Huron last March, but cautions that the number is likely conservative.
Schooley says many homeless continue to "couch surf" -- staying with relatives or friends for a few days at a time, while trying to find permanent accommodation for themselves.
She says the County works with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Choices for Change and Safe Homes for Youth, as well as providing their own programs.
The "Out of the Cold" program offers beds and hot meals to the homeless in Goderich.
Schooley says not all programs aimed at helping homeless people have federal or provincial support.
