Bruce County Record Descriptions Available Online

Bruce County | by Ken Hashizume

People can access by-laws and tax rolls to do research such as tracing family history.

There is way for Bruce County residents to access historical municipal information.

They can be found at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton.

These records include tax rolls, council and committee minutes, and by-laws for the County of Bruce, its current member municipalities, and former townships, towns, and villages prior to amalgamation.

The museum has been keeping these records in an environmentally-controlled storage area since the 1980s.

Staff have been working to get the records described online.

Museum Archivist Deb Strudevant says part of their mandate is to make these records accessible to the public.

But she says not all records are being made available because of copyright or privacy issues.

Sturdevant says it is great to have a nice inventory that people can go online or visit the museum to search.

She says people can use the archives to do research such as their family history.

People can access the records by going to brucemuseum.ca/collections-research or in person in the Research Room at the museum.
