It was a special night for Saugeen Shores Winterhawks fans on two fronts.
First, the team won its WOAA Sr. Hockey game against the Elora Rocks in convincing fashion, 7-1.
Secondly, the Winterhawks honoured a former long-time captain of the Winterhawks Greg Thede.
In the game itself, the Hawks controlled from start to finish.
As a matter of fact, the only goal the Rocks got, was on a penalty shot in the second period, scored by Lyam Cripps.
Otherwise it was all Winterhawks with Mike Rocca leading the way with 2 goals, along with singles from Bryan Kazarian, Josh Deyell, Miles MacLean, Michael Johnstone, and Connor Patton.
Even the goalie Jeff Flagler got into the act with an assist on the Miles MacLean goal in the second period during a power play.
Coach Matt Turcotte was happy with what he saw, particularly the way the team was moving the puck up the ice.
Another big game for the Hawks takes place Saturday (Jan. 12) when they travel to Clinton for a game with the first place Radars.
Next home game for the Hawks is January 18th, when the Shelburne Muskies come calling.
That game will be the final home game of the regular season.
Before Friday's game, the Winterhawks honoured former captain Greg Thede in a special ceremony at centre ice.
Thede, the first captain in Winterhawks history, led the club to four league championships in 2009, and 2011-13.
He was presented with a watch from Elgin Jewellers and a recognition plaque from Rowland's Independent Grocer, sponsor of Friday's game.
Thede says he was overwhelmed with the recognition saying he never anticipated anything like the ceremony.
He says it was a special moment and brought back a lot of memories during his 11 seasons with the Hawks.
