Snowmobilers will soon have trail access to the east end of Walkerton.
Brockton is working with the Saugeen Snowmobile Club to bring an Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club trail into Walkerton.
This involves extending the snowmobile trail from the Brant line and traveling to the East Ridge Business Park.
Saugeen Snowmobile Spokesperson Paul MacLennan says this will benefit Brockton as well as avid snowmobilers.
He says by opening up Walkerton’s east end, the new snowmobile trail will support the local business community.
MacLennan adds snowmobiling means tourist dollars and the economic spin-offs to providing access to Walkerton’s east end will help make Walkerton a snowmobile destination.
Under the agreement the Saugeen Snowmobile Club will be responsible for trimming trees along the trail as well as ensuring adequate insurance coverage and signage.
With Brockton’s blessing in hand, MacLennan says the real work begins which includes talking with all of the affected landowner, and putting in over 150 stakes as well as the associated signage.
Some more snow would also be very helpful.
There is a snowmobile trail that leads to Walkerton’s west side, however this new one will provide easier access to restaurants, accommodations and downtown businesses.
The Saugeen Snowmobile Club is part of District 9 which has over 6000 memberships.
MacLennan says locally there are over 300 snowmobile trail permits issued in this area.
