Firefighters Bring Toys To 400 Families

Owen Sound | by Claire McCormack

The Owen Sound Fire Department's Toy Drive Gathered Thousands of Toys To Those In Need

The Owen Sound Firefighter Toy drive helped bring christmas cheer to about 400 families this holiday season.

"We are very pleased with the support we got form the community," says Fire Prevention Officer Greg Nicol. The fire department had donation boxes set up in stores all over the city.

He says they had bags of toys for each and every one of those children.

Nicol says the top toys this year were LOL dolls, which are dolls that are hidden in a container so it's a surprise when kids see which doll they've gotten.

He says Slime was also a big toy this year too, "Nakd Basics downtown made a whole bunch of Slime for us and we were able to give out packages, " says Nicol. (Slime is a goo like Play Dough or Silly Putty and Nakd Basics sells all-natural products)

Firefighters also collected cash donations to distribute gift cards which are good for older kids and teens.

Nicol says the Salvation Army determines which families are in need of toys and passes that information along to the fire department.
