Bruce Peninsula Man Thanks OPP Officer

Bruce Peninsula | by Ken Hashizume

David Phelps is crediting Constable Laurie Houghton for helping deal with a traumatic event.

A resident living along the Bruce Peninsula is thanking an OPP officer for helping deal with the trauma of a diving incident.

Denise and David Phelps were doing some diving at a shipwreck on Georgian Bay on September 22, 2016 when David found his wife unconscious about 10 metres below surface.

Efforts to save Denise's life were successful after she was taken to a decompression chamber in Tobermory.

But David was not over the emotions from it and that was when OPP Constable Laurie Houghton provided support and compassion.

Houghton was investigating a crash at the time and was one of the first officers to respond.

She now works at the Grey County OPP Crime Unit.

David Phelps says it was the support of Houghton that allowed him to seek help and credits her actions for saving him from a mental breakdown.
