Winter may be coming but many cycling enthusiasts are already thinking Gran Fondo in Saugeen Shores.
The 2019 event will be held next August and once again Laveer Engineering has stepped up as a sponsor but this time as a Gold Sponsor.
Last year, they were a Silver Sponsor.
Laveer Director Peter Gowthorpe, at a special ceremony where a cheque for $5,000 was donated, says raising funds for the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) is a good cause for his organization, fitting in with a lot of the values of the company.
With that in mind, Gowthorpe says it was a natural progression to increase its sponsorship awareness.
He says those from Laveer that participated in the 2018 event, himself included, thought it was well-organized and a lot of fun.
Gowthorpe says he particularly enjoyed riding on the roads without having to worry about traffic.
Last year, the group did the 110K route and are shooting for the big 160K route in 2019.
SMHF realized about $140,000 last year which has gone into purchasing equipment for the Southampton and Owen Sound Regional Hospitals.
Foundation Chair Jim Barbour, who accepted the cheque, says they already have approximately 50 registrations on the books for the 2019 event which is well ahead of last year.
Barbour says he's thrilled to see Laveer step up to the plate again, and even increase its sponsorship support.
He hopes others will follow Laveer's lead.
