Radiothon Blasts Past Fundraising Goal

Saugeen Shores | by John Divinski

98 The Beach Light The Way Radiothon had a goal of $50,000 & raised $75,000

It was beyond the wildest dreams of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) and its Light the Way Day Radiothon on 98 the Beach.

With a goal of $50,000, by time the 12-hour event ended at 6pm on Thursday evening, $75,000 had been raised to help purchase up to date equipment at the Southampton Hospital and to help fund the purchase of the a new multi million dollar MRI machine at the Owen Sound Regional Hospital.

SMHF Executive Director Tracy Murray, who was taking part in her first Radiothon, said it was an incredible experience.

Murray said she was hoping they would reach the $50,000 goal and "never in (her) wildest dreams" even thought about a $75,000 total.

Added to the excitement of the 3rd annual Radiothon was the first ever Pee Wee road hockey game that was played on the basketball court behind the radio station.

The kids received pledges of $10,000 for that event and they'll now go on to compete for the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup.

Should they win, they will receive $100,000 to give to their favourite charity which is the Southampton Hospital.

Murray says it's great to have children of 11 and 12 years of age, learning about the hospital and supporting the hospital.

She says it bodes well for the future when the children grow up and she hopes they will consider giving to the hospital then as well.

This year's Light the Way Honourary Chair Judy Rich says it was a lot of fun but she was taken mostly by community partners, and businesses coming to the radio station to drop off food, donations or simply just to say thanks for a job well done.

Rich says it was "like having a group hug all day long in the community."
