Using Tech To Get Tourists

Saugeen Shores | by John Divinski

Suageen Shores Chamber looks at e-displays, renewable parking, interactive maps.

The Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce wants to move to the next technological level when it comes to promoting tourism for the municipality.

The Chamber's Executive Director Kimberley Inniss-Petersen says she wants to tap into social media more than ever and that includes inviting social media writers to the area to see for themselves what we have to offer.

Inniss-Petersen says, in some cases, that kind of tourism-travel publicity, could have more impact than some of the traditional print advertising and it could be much cheaper as well.

The strategy is to appeal to a wider variety of consumers, across more social platforms that could create a bigger reach.

She says for one thing, they want to modernize what the Chamber has to offer now to visitors to the area, such as improved tourism kiosks.

Inniss-Petersen says nowadays, areas have electronic displays that allow visitors easy access to renewable parking or downloading an interactive map.

In a presentation to Saugeen Shores Committee of the Whole, December 10th, she admits they're not quite sure what the finished product will look like but it's imperative that the concept be explored.

Inness-Petersen says the proposed 2019 budget reflects the strategic direction in which the Chamber will take tourism, primarily through innovative technology and staff training investments.

Inniss-Petersen wouldn't say how much all of the proposed improvements were going to cost, but the presentation indicated they were looking for a 4% increase for 2019 from the town in upcoming budget discussions.

Although no specific amount was given Inness-Petersen did say, they're looking for anywhere from $5,000 to $40,000 from the municipality.

She says besides increasing the social media impact of tourism, the Chamber is looking to improve its website overall.

The budget request has been referred to budget discussions by councillors.
