Potential CPE Case at Owen Sound Hospital

Owen Sound | by Matt Hermiz

Rehab unit temporarily closed at health officials investigate

The rehab unit at the Owen Sound Regional Hospital is temporarily closed due to a potential case of CPE.

Grey Bruce Health Services says CPE is resistant to many types of antibiotics and can spread from person to person through physical contact. It can survive on surfaces, but can not spread through the air.

Health officials say most CPE carriers have no symptoms of illness, but for those who do have symptoms, it is very difficult to treat.

A number of precautions are in place at the Owen Sound Hospital to protect patients, visitors and staff.

Health officials say patients directly impacted are being cared for in single rooms, while visitors to those rooms must wear protective clothing.

All visitors to the Owen Sound Hospital are being reminded to wash their hands when entering and exiting.
