People in Tottenham will soon have another option when it comes to where they can buy their groceries.
A new commercial plaza is being brought to Mill Street East and it'll include a No Frills.
That announcement was made by the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal which ruled in favour of the decision almost two and a half years after New Tecumseth council approved the development.
Ballymore Homes was granted the zoning amendment request in 2016 to build the plaza at the northeast corner of Mill Street East and Hawke Crescent.
In late 2016, Piersanti and Company Professional Corporation appealed the decision to the OMB.
The corporation, which represents the Tottenham Mall and Foodland plaza, argued that the community wasn't big enough to support additional stores.
Hearing began in September 2017 with the LPAT releasing its decision yesterday.
The tribunal acknowledged the additional grocery store would have a big impact on the Foodland stores in Tottenham and Beeton.
Officials said the closure of one of the stores is a possibility but that they aren't persuaded that such a closure due to the Ballymore applications would jeopardize the commercial structure of the town.
They also said the northern commercial area of Tottenham would work the same way the southern portion is currently working for those in the Deer Springs subdivision.
With the recent renovations to the Tottenham Mall and addition of Vince's Market, the tribunal said the downtown core are vibrant and would continue to be the focal point of the community.
The 5.7 acre site will include 60-thousand square feet of retail space along with the 22-thousand square foot grocery store.
