A new Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital on a different site.
That has been selected by hospital officials after reviewing 5 potential redevelopment options.
Carmine Stumpo, OSMH President and CEO, says there are several challenges to building on site including the fact the hospital is, for the most part, a series of older buildings, with some new, and making connections between new and old can be very challenging with the build.
As well, the construction would have to take place while operating a hospital.
The planning is in its infancy, with a 10-15 year timeline projected before there is a new facility.
Stumpo says it's a five stage process and they are only at stage one.
A location for a new hospital has not been selected.
As for the current property, consideration is being given to repurposing the Community Tower into Transitional Care space or a Long Term Care facility.
Stumpo says there is a growing need in Orillia.
The remainder of the site could be developed into a combination of housing options, physician or healthcare offices, parkland and retail space.
Stumpo says they will need support from all aspects of the community including fundraising to get the hospital built.
