SIU Terminates Investigation in Brussels Arrest

Brussels | by Matt Hermiz

38-year-old man reported multiple injuries after arrest on Oct. 5

The province's Special Investigations Unit has terminated an investigation into the arrest of a man in Brussels last month.

The SIU says on Oct. 5, OPP officers were called to a residence for a domestic situation.

A 38-year-old man was arrested and transported to the Goderich OPP detachment, where he was lodged in a cell.

The SIU says the man was later medically assessed and diagnosed with a fractured a rib and left hand.

Acting Director Marino says the SIU found the man did not actually sustain a rib fracture and there was no evidence the injury to the man's left hand was caused by police.

"Rather, the evidence provides very good reason to believe the injury was self-inflicted prior to the arrival of any police officer," Marino says.
