Harold Fleet

Hanover | by Robyn Garvey

Hanover Council Candidate

1) Hanover is bursting at the seams and in need of more land for development.  How would you address this challenge?

One of our biggest challenges is our ongoing border issue to the East.  We have to find a mutual resolution with West Grey that is beneficial to both parties. We have to be progressive and forward thinking with new solutions and options.  The possibility of new representation on both Councils, will bring new personalities with different approaches, which may prove to be successful in negotiations.
2) Many residents are expressing safety concerns regarding Hanover’s Trail System.  Much of this concern stems from ‘Tent City’, (individuals living in tents in the forested area near the trails.)  How should the Town address these safety concerns?

The safety issue on our Trail System is a very complex one.  It IS NOT a simple matter of moving people off of the trails, the issues are much larger.  We have a definite need in our community to provide more accessible and affordable housing.  We also have a need for mental health care funding, and addiction program funding.  These solutions are not a quick fix, and need to include The County of Grey and our local MP to find funding and resolutions. In the meantime, I think our Police Services are monitoring and dealing with this situation as best they can for the safety of all citizens.

3) Would you support allowing a cannabis retail operation to set up shop in Hanover?

Legislation was passed in Queens Park announcing a deadline for municipalities to opt out of retail shops for cannabis in their communities.  I know of communities   holding public consultation and information meetings to get input from residents and their local police. This is something I would like to see in Hanover.  This is not a decision to be made without knowing all of the facts.
