Steve Fitzsimmons (incumbent)

Hanover | by Robyn Garvey

Hanover Council Candidate

1) Hanover is bursting at the seams and in need of more land for development.  How would you address this challenge?

We need to keep working with our neighbours on possible co-operation there.   It's of mutual benefit for everyone to do so.   We have also been talking extensively with the County in recognizing our unique situation - the fact that Hanover occupies less than half of one percent of the land area of the county, but has about 17 percent of the jobs.   We will also look to the north part of Hanover for phase three of our Business Park as well.

2) Many residents are expressing safety concerns regarding Hanover’s Trail System.  Much of this concern stems from ‘Tent City’, (individuals living in tents in the forested area near the trails.)  How should the Town address these safety concerns?

In terms of people feeling safe on the trails, we definitely need more regular enforcement, trail mile markers so people know roughly their exact locations throughout the trails and potentially some cameras to keep an eye on what is going on there.

We've been looking for solutions for housing for these individuals and are working with a variety of stake holders, which includes the County and many of the local churches on possible ways to address this.
3) Would you support allowing a cannabis retail operation to set up shop in Hanover?

I don't support the legalization of Cannabis in the first place, but since it's now going to happen, we will have to deal with it. Taking my personal opinion out of the issue, I will vote whichever way the majority of Town residents wish me to.  I work for them.  I've been talking to lots of people while campaigning to gauge their opinion on this issue and will continue to do so, so at the moment I'd count me as an undecided and will continue to dialogue with residents about this.
