Mary Winkler

Hanover | by Robyn Garvey

Hanover Mayoral Candidate

1) Hanover is bursting at the seams and in need of more land for development.  How would you address this challenge?

Hanover needs to explore  options to expand to the East and create partnerships for generating options for future development. I have a great network of connections; local, regional, provincial and national and  I feel that I have the ability to create the necessary relationships to secure funding and move our needs forward. The town needs to ensure our strategies for growth are inline with our Official Plan and we are following the guidelines for growth and development for both residential and business development.

2) Many residents are expressing safety concerns regarding Hanover’s Trail System.  Much of this concern stems from ‘Tent City’, (individuals living in tents in the forested area near the trails.)  How should the Town address these safety concerns?

I feel that the development of a task force is in order with representation from various agencies such as Police Services, Social Services and those working on poverty reduction strategies in the Community, to work together to address these concerns of the community while finding appropriate resources for those individuals to seek affordable housing and community supports. A strong campaign on helping our community once again feel safe on our trails is vital to the health and overall well being of our community.

3) Would you support allowing a cannabis retail operation to set up shop in Hanover?

Council has a very difficult decision ahead to determine if we are going to proceed with allowing a retail cannabis operation in our community. I don't feel that the Town of Hanover needs to make a decision quickly or lightly and needs to be well informed on both the positive and negative effects this could create. We need to be current on the changing legislation and we need to know how the community overall feels in regards to the decision. Community consultation will be key and should be taken into consideration in determining how we as a Town proceed. The development of a Cannabis Task Force would be recommended to ensure we are taking into consideration all points of view.
