Ray Botten

Owen Sound | by Matt Hermiz

Owen Sound Mayoral Candidate

1) Yes or No: Should Owen Sound allow bricks-and-mortar marijuana shops to operate in its boundaries?

No. We as a city must quickly define our stance in Not allowing "pot stores" to be established.
I see this new legalization of marijuana being a gateway drug that will cause thousands of people to NOT end up in a better than life scenario. I believe it is going to cause many to end up harmed and hurt. Many will feel (in the beginning) they have their right to get high. It will prove too many (as time proceeds) more negative effects in relationships and work place related problems. It will far out way any positive or so called freedoms!

2) Yes or No: Should Owen Sound lower its property tax rate? If yes, how would you achieve this? If no, why?

Yes. My vision for our city is to rapidly grow our economy by investing in our people! I will introduce a 25% shortfall on our 30 million dollars in property taxes. This will create an approximate 10% decrease in property taxes. Property taxes must be reduced to stimulate growth which will support the home owner into prosperity. As I introduce a 10% decrease in property taxes, it will have begun great spin off results. Results from investing directly into our people!

3) Yes or No: Should Owen Sound continue to offer a vacancy rebate on commercial and industrial property? Why?

Yes. I am saying Yes to the rebate but only for a few more years. We should put in place a 1 year tax relief for businesses that can prove they are in financial difficulty. Yes for now, but soon to change for a 1 year maximum term.

4) What is your plan to attract new industry and jobs to Owen Sound?

My plan is to stimulate our economy by lowering property taxes. Secondly: My vision is to transform our main street downtown (2nd Ave. East) to a complete total green space environment with trees, benches, paths and a ceiling cover that will extend over the entire downtown. It will be wheel chair accessible and inviting for all! Parking will be at the back of buildings. Our large parking lot (behind Scotia Bank) could also be extended to a 4th level high rise. Our 4 seasons will have different venues and the landscape will draw people from around the world!

5) What is one other issue facing Owen Sound you would like to speak to, and how will you address this if elected?

In order to help those on the streets of Owen Sound, we must Reopen "The Sanctuary". It is our Only Emergency Shelter for anyone in need in Grey/Bruce Counties. Thousands have already been served in this shelter, which had operated for 10 years plus. When we have our shelter in operation it is highly noted that our streets are less active in street crime. Building up friends who are broken and vulnerable is our responsibility as humans and as an Owen Sound family city! I will introduce an annual honorarium to continue this great service to our city!
