LAURIE (SMOKEY) GOLDEN

Northern Bruce Peninsula | by Claire McCormack

Nothern Bruce Peninsula Candidate Q & A Municipal Election 2018

1/ Do you support Bricks-and-mortar marijuana stores in your municipality? Why? Why not?
I would not support marijuana outlets in our municipality, if that actually became an option.  The  less our youth is exposed to it, the better.  I believe all infused "edibles" that resemble childrens candy, (ie: gummy bears) should be  banned from all outlets, and even on line.  States who were leaders in the legalization of marijuana have ordered these off the shelves for obvious reasons.

2/ What would be your main priority if elected to council?
My priority will be to work to ensure that the municipal council, as the elected representatives of the people, are front and centre in ANY discussion regarding the future of the Northern Bruce Peninsula.  The history and values of our citizens must be considered in any discussion affecting their future.

3/ How to you plan to address growth in some parts of the municipality while also handling the tourism influx in the area?
The municipality has initiated a sustainable tourism study.  I would like to see owners and staff who deal with this on the front lines, be more involved.  Now that another busy summer is over, they are the best source of information to identify what the problems/solutions are. Further, they will know if suggestions are actually able to be implemented.  Our zoning bylaws dictate development...this issue has become somewhat polarized, but I think we can find common ground...in the long term, I don't see major changes.  Development will continue to be cautious...primarily to meet the accommodation and excursion requirements of visitors.
