Opposition To Proposed Bear Estates Expansion

Collingwood | by Catherine Thompson

Community group concerned about protection of wetlands, availability of parking.

Some Collingwood residents are worried about a proposed expansion at Bear Estates at Living Water Resorts.

At a town committee meeting on Monday evening, three members of the community group Save Our Shorelines (SOS) Collingwood gave deputations.

One of them was Jeff Newton who says they don't consider themselves a group or an association, but rather a movement.

He says they are worried about the nearby wetlands and they feel council should reject the current updated Environmental Impact Study because they believe it is insufficient.

The group wants a new full study done.

They also feel there won't be enough parking to handle the expansion.

The plan is to add four floors to the Bear Estates for conference space and then in the next phase after this, a hotel is to be built and be connected to the Bear Estates with an above ground parking garage.

SOS Collingwood says they have about 800 signatures on a paper petition and over six thousand online.

Following the deputations, the packed council chambers was told that the developer has deferred the plans to 2019 so any decision making will be in the hands of the new council.
