Owen Sound's violent crime rate shot up last year according to new data published by Statistics Canada.
The Scenic City checked in at No. 62 on the 2017 Violent Crime Severity Index list among 307 municipalities with populations over 10,000 across Canada. That compares to 128th in 2016.
An analyst with the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics tells Bayshore Broadcasting news there are a few reasons for the jump by Owen Sound on that list.
Warren Silver says the number of robberies jumped from 4 in 2016 to 12 the following year.
Silver says increases like that, helped push the Scenic City higher on the list.
Along with robbery, he says there were increases in sexual assaults, assaults, criminal harrassment and uttering threats.
In Ontario, Owen Sound had the ninth-highest violent crime severity rating.
Meanwhile, Owen Sound ranked 100th in Canada when it came to non-violent crime severity, leaving its overall Crime Severity Index rating 85th.
Silver says by comparison, Toronto ranked lower than Owen Sound on the overall violent crime severity index, coming in at 159 while Owen Sound was 85.
The Crime Severity Index is published annually by Statistics Canada based on reporting from police services across the country.
According to Statistics Canada, all crimes reported to police are given a numerical weight determined by severity -- based on court data, maximum sentences and actual sentences.
Every single violation contributes to the overall Crime Severity Index value for the given municipality.
The severity weights are updated every five years to reflect any changes to the Criminal Code of Canada or sentencing.
