Upper Grand First to Include Pregnancy or Parental Leave

Regional | by Jill Young

Trustees will be able to get 20 consecutive weeks for a child without requiring approval.

The Upper Grand District School Board has become the first in the province to include a pregnancy and parental leave for trustees.

At a special board meeting this week, trustees approved a revised bylaw that will come into effect December 1st.

As part of provincial legislation, all school boards are required to have such a policy in place by March 1st, 2019.

Under the new bylaw, a trustee could take a 20 consecutive week or less pregancy or parental leave and they would not be required to get approval for that.

It includes leaves for a trustee's own pregnancy, the birth of the trustee's child, or even adoption of a child.

The next step is for trustees to develop an official board policy this fall.
