Fishing and fundraising this weekend in Orangeville.
The annual Island Lake Bass Derby runs tomorrow and Sunday from 7am to 3pm both days.
This will mark the 10th year of the event put on by Credit Valley Conservation, Credit Valley Conservation Foundation and the Friends of Island Lake.
Money raised through the catch and release derby will go towards various Island Lake Conservation Area projects.
Event coordinator and FOIL member Steve Murphy says the two days are perfect for first time and experience anglers.
He said they have "special kids’ categories to help encourage fishing at all ages. Our goal is to promote fishing at Island Lake and raise money for projects around the park."
Officials expect more than 300 people to take part in the derby over the course of the weekend.
They say participants have a chance to win more than $6200 in prizes in categories that include big catch prizes for the top 10 bass, as well as special categories for the top pike, perch and crappie.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary, participants can catch one of 10 tagged fish and win $100.
There are separate kids categories for youth ages 11 and under along with daily ceremonies to award trophies in all kids’ categories.
Registration includes daily admission to the park and boat launch access, however, an Ontario fishing license is required.
Electric boat rental and live bait are also available at additional cost.
After the derby, everyone is invited to Islandpalooza, an after party celebration that will have live music, food and a beer garden at the waterfront amphitheatre from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Those celebrations after the derby are open to the general public.
The annual derby is sponsored by local businesses, including lead sponsor Country 105.
