MPP Walker To Be Conservative Party Whip

Regional | by Kevin Bernard

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker has been asked to be party whip instead of house speaker.

MPPs will be called to the Ontario Legislature on Wednesday, July 11th and the first order of business will be to pick a Speaker of the House.

Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker will NOT be letting his name stand for the vote.

Walker says he was getting a lot of support from Conservative and Opposition MPPs but the Premier's office called and asked him to be the government whip.

That means he can still make speeches in the legislature and does not have to be neutral to the discussions like the Speaker has to be.

Bill Walker says it felt like a better fit for him, so he has accepted the offer.

Meanwhile, at least 4 Tory MPPs are after the Speaker's Chair.

Ted Arnott, Rick Nichols, Jane McKenna and Randy Hillier have all submitted their names.

Walker says once a Speaker is picked through a secret ballot on Wednesday, the Throne Speech will be read the following day.
