Students Leave Mural At Coliseum.

Saugeen Shores | by John Divinski

G.C. Huston students unveil art work in the lobby of the Saugeen Shores arena.

Many students at G. C. Huston school in Southampton are leaving their mark at the Southampton Coliseum, through art.

A mural, created by Zach Leaver and Layla Cushnie, with the help of fellow-students was unveiled recently (JUNE 6)  in the lobby of the arena.

Leaver says the mural represents the various uses of the arena but also depicts other activities the region is known for, such as farming, curling and the iconic lighthouse.

A 14 year old Grade eight student, Leaver says he and Layla brainstormed many hours to come up with ideas of what they wanted to put down on canvas.

He says the project took about 2-months to complete.

Now that it's done, Leaver says it's "cool" to see it in the Coliseum but it's "scary" as well that so many people will see their finished product.

Leaver says he plays organized hockey at the arena and he fully expects to be ribbed by teammates about his art, adorning the lobby.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith was on hand for the unveiling and points out it's not just the grown-ups who do things for the community but the youngsters as well.

Smith says everyone who helped out on the project should be proud of themselves.

Besides Leaver and Cushnie, other artist team members include:  Becca Selman; Jacque LaReivre; Abby Skinner; Serena Trelford-Ladd; Sloan Madill; Adrianna Joseph; Joe Hodgkins and Mya Falsey.
