Call For Smoke Free By-Law For Goderich Beaches

Goderich | by Peter Jackson

The Huron County Health Unit suggests the town extend the by-law to cover the town's three beaches

Goderich Council has received an update on the Smoke Free Ontario Act, which a Huron County Health Unit official says affects the municipality in several areas.

Senior Health Promoter Angela Willert told Council recently that Courthouse Square and the town's three beaches are affected by smokers, and a municipal by-law on smoking should cover them.

Willert notes that several Ontario municipalities' no smoking by-laws cover beaches in their areas.

She mentions a smoke-free by-law covering Main, St. Christopher's and Rotary Beaches would also make them cleaner, due to fewer cigarette butts that would be picked up during shoreline cleanups.

She says that a municipal no smoking by-law would also remove any questions surrounding Courthouse Square, where the Courthouse itself is covered by new a Huron County by-law.

Willert shared with Council the findings of a Health Unit survey that shows a majority of County residents favour a comprehensive smoke-free by-law.
