The 2018 Grey Bruce Hike for Hospice will take place all around Grey & Bruce counties this Sunday. (May 6th, 2018)

People are coming together in order to raise funds and awareness for hospice palliative care programs and services.

100% of the funds raised in our community help benefit Chapman House, our local hospice.

The hospice palliative care services provided by Chapman House are at least 50% funded by charitable donations which make this annual fundraiser a key component to ensuring the future of our community hospices.

Chapman House is a community-owned, community-operated facility that operates in a space which was built for the care they provide.

Their service is free to all patients and their families, because they believe a person’s financial condition should not determine whether they have access to specialized end-of-life care.

Their residential hospice is staffed with professionals of many disciplines - 24 hours per day,7 days a week.

The average daily cost per bed of $600 is less than half the cost of a hospital bed in Ontario. Residential Hospice Grey Bruce opened its doors in 2013 and moved into its permanent home Chapman House in 2017.

Since 2013 dignified end-of-life comfort care has been offered to over 500 residents and their families.

Although the Province of Ontario fully supports the palliative care Chapman House provides, funding is only provided for nursing and personal support worker staffing.

This means all other aspects of the operation such as patient meals, medical equipment and the comfort of the rooms are only possible through donation.

Each year they rely heavily on our community to help cover these costs and make ends meet.
