Hats for Hughes in Huge Win for Siskins

Stayner | by Ken Hashizume

Stayner grabs a commanding 3-0 lead on Mount Forest in North Conference Final.

The Stayner Siskins are soaring in the PJHL North Conference Final.

Ben Hughes (3 goals, 1 assist) had a hat trick as the Siskins downed the Mount Forest Patriots 5-3 Sunday afternoon and now have a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Goals from Hughes and Ty Kulba got Stayner out to a 2-0 first period lead.

The Patriots took advantage of some Siskins penalties and Brendan Aitken scored on a power play and trailed 2-1.

But Kulba (2 goals, 1 assist) and Hughes later scored consecutive goals to put Stayner out in front 4-1.

Mount Forest was down 4-2 in the third when Klayton Hoelscher (1 goal, 1 assist) snagged an errant pass in front of the Siskins net and appeared to have scored.

It was initially called off but after a discussion by the on-ice officials, it was ruled a goal and the Patriots were within one.

Kevin Boyd collected 2 assists while Marcus Semiao stopped 30 shots in the victory.

Blair Butchart (1 goal, 1 assist) had the other Patriots goal while David Lobsinger made 32 saves in the loss.

Power plays saw Stayner go 2-for-5, Mount Forest were 1-for-9 and gave up a shorthanded goal.

The Siskins can complete the sweep with a win in Game Four Tuesday night in Mount Forest.
