Bicycles of all sorts, shapes and sizes will be what the upcoming Gran Fondo Lake Huron event is all about and who better to know about that than a bicycle merchant.
Brett Martin, owner/operator of Martin's Bicycle Shop in Southampton has stepped up to become a Gold level sponsor of the event, with a $5,000 donation.
Martin says he likes the Gran Fondo concept because it's not a race as much as it is an opportunity for the occasional biker to get out with the family for a leisurely ride through the region and at the same time, raise money for the Southampton Hospital.
He says he's impressed with the recent hospital renovation, "And anything we can do to help and hopefully keep it up and running in this area and moving forward, is perfect."
Martin has also thrown in an enticement to raise as much pledge money as you can.
He says he'll be giving away a $1,500 Trek Domane bicycle.
Martin says, "Anyone that raises over $500 gets a ballot to win the bicycle. If it's a thousand dollars, (you'll get) two ballots," and so on.
The more you raise the more ballots you'll get and the better your odds.
The Southampton businessman also says, for those that don't own bikes but would like to be part of the Gran Fondo, he'll be renting bicycles for you to use.
Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation Executive Director Sally Kidson says their goal is to raise $150,000 to help purchase medical equipment for the hospital.
The Gran Fondo will have four different routes of 30K, 70K, 110K and 160K that will stretch throughout the region on August 19th.
You can register to take part at granfondolakehuron.ca
Bayshore Broadcasting (98 the Beach) is the major media sponsor of the event.
