Today is the 40th anniversary of Paul Henderson's historic goal in the 1972 Summit Series.
Henderson, who had also scored the winning goals in Games 6 & 7, entered Canadian sporting folklore with his game winner with just 34 seconds remaining in the 8th and deciding game of the Canada-Russia hockey series.
Do you remember where you were ?
I do remember it was a Thursday, and the game started during lunch hour.
I'm not sure which kid at Huron Park Public School had the transistor radio, but we crowded around it before the afternoon bell and were shocked by the description of JP Parise's threat of the referee just 4 minutes into the game. This can't be good.
Once inside the school, we went directly to the Grade 8 classroom where Mr Price had the large beige TV with the barn door screen covers wide open and that's where we spent the afternoon, watching hockey. Could you do something like that today ?
When Henderson scored, I was sitting between Jack Longlad & Jimmy Hansford, as the classroom exploded. Jack Longlad, who was among the bigger kids in Grade 7, leapt up and sent those around him sprawling.
The only other thing I remember was during the walk home from school, the proposal was raised that Friday would be a holiday to celebrate the Canadian victory.
Such was the atmosphere, such was the euphoria, such are the memories of September 28th, 1972.
