No Need For Referendum

So the Parti Quebecois is back in power -- albeit in a minority position -- in Quebec.

It hasn't taken long for people to start thinking that the sky is falling because the PQ might hold a referendum to decide if Quebec should leave Canada.

Not gonna happen.

For many of us, we've been down this road before with Rene Levesque when he was premier from 1976 to 1985.

He did hold a referendum but it lost and I must admit it was the narrowest of margins but nevertheless the question lost and Quebec is still with us.

Yes, the province can be a pain in the butt at times but separating from Canada will do no one any good.

Quebec as a stand-alone nation will be out of business in less than a year and Canada will still be a country without Quebec but it will be awfully inconvenient and could play havoc with our economics as well.

Cooler heads will tell you we need each other and that holds true for any province.

Yes, the Parti Quebecois is back in but what were the other choices?

The fact of the matter was voters had grown tired of the Liberals and just wanted to turf them out.

The student wars and other controversies sealed the fate of the Liberals long before the writ was brought down.

All the Parti Quebecois had to do was tow the line -- no controversies -- and they're in and that's what happened.

PQ leader Pauline Marois has admitted she'll have to choose her battles wisely and I would imagine that means separation as well.

In the meantime, she and her colleagues need to run the province and everyone will be watching.

I'm John Divinski
