Award Winning Food

If you frequent any farmers markets in and around the area, you have probably seen those bright yellow signs -- Farmers Feed Cities.

Well, farmers do a lot more than that.

They also are providing healthy lunches for many of school children in the region.

Earlier this week the Premier's Awards for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence -- recognizing innovators who contribute to the success of Ontario's agri-food sector -- were announced and there were a number of farmers from this region picking up this prestigious award.

Carrick Wines and Ciders, Mildmay, and Primeridge Pure, Markdale were honoured.

In the Simcoe County area, Creemore 100 Mile Store, the Simcoe County Cattlemen's Association and Nicholyn Farms Phelpston were honoured as well.

Its what Nicholyn farms did to get this honour I want to draw your attention to.

Nick and Linda Van Casterens looked at the pizza and hot dog fundraising lunches at their local school and thought they could do better than that and you know what they did.

They now offer daily nutritious and tasty local food lunches that are healthier for the kids.

A pilot that ran for 20 weeks at one school has now expanded to serve five schools in the area, as well as staff at the local Ministry of Natural Resources and Public Health Unit offices.

On average, the Van Casterens prepare 600 healthy lunches a week for these clients.

That is not only deserving of an award from the Premier, but a pat on the back from all those parents out there who worry that their kids are not getting healthy nutritious means when at school.

It is nice to know, thanks to Nicholyn Farms, that they are.
