Goderich Commemorates Tornado

Recently my community commemorated the first anniversary of the F3 tornado of August 21st, 2011.

I remember the day well. I was working at the Beach in Goderich, doing my regular weekend newsdesk run.

About 3:48 that afternoon I was watching the Environment Canada website, when a posted "Severe weather watch" flipped to "tornado warning"-- the fine print saying imminent, 12 minute estimate.

I recall the loud roar as a white wall of water moved sideways past the station's picture windows and the hail bouncing like golf balls.

The next day I remember walking through town in silence like so many others-- letting what we saw contradict our memories, while backhoes beeped and small planes buzzed overhead, securing the networks their footage.

It was the beginning of a long year that has seen many changes in Goderich, and on the recent first anniversary, exotic arrays of potted plants shout "Canada's Prettiest Town" as we await a new tree canopy some twenty years down the road.

One of the events I covered on the August 21st anniversary was the unveiling of the "Donor Wall", recognizing contributions to the Disaster Relief Committee.

Reverend Tom Dunbar, former pastor of Victoria Street United Church, couldn't have had better timing.

His benediction invoking a moment's silence urged the 100 or so assembled to both mourn what what lost, and celebrate the ways the community has come together in the intervening year.

The silence was then punctuated by four chimes from the Courthouse clock, marking a year to the day that the twister had struck.

I realized Rule of Life Number 520 had come home to roost-- "Tornadoes don't always strike somewhere else.
