A Bonus Slap In The Face

Even when the legislature isn't sitting the government has the ability to really make the electorate feel like they don't matter, give us your tax money and don't complain about the way we spend it.

The most recent aggravation is most Ontario Public Service managers eligible to receive bonuses last year got them even though the government knew our provincial finances were in the toilet.

They shelled out 35.6 million in bonuses after telling us they were going to be fiscally responsible.

I'd like to know how many of we taxpayers who are trying to get by on less, got a bonus or ever got a bonus for that matter.

Premier McGuinty has threatened to impose a new contract on Ontario teachers to freeze wages if they don't sign new agreements by September 1st and then has the gall to threaten this, as about 98 per cent of eligible managers in the Ontario Public Service received their big bonus for last year.

About 87-hundred of a possible 89 thundered eligible civil servants received it, 3.6 per cent of total pay for most, but some got as much as 12 per cent.

The government says bonuses are part of their pay package and the amount of money spent has actually declined, like as a taxpayer I care!!!

What I care about is that they actually got bonuses consisting of taxpayers money even though this government has put us 15 billion plus in the hole.

The opposition says the government is sending mixed messages about imposing a wage freezes while handing out bonuses to top civil servants.

After much ado from the Opposition and the public our Premier said late yesterday he'll review the bonus system.

From Where I Sit -- this is a slap in the face to all of us.

Most of us are biting the bullet trying to keep our finances together and pay our mortgages and educate our kids, and of course ..... pay our taxes that many of us feel they are obviously squandering.

I'm Dan McLean
