The Olympics Inspire

Let the post-Olympic letdown begin.

For two weeks many of us -- including me -- have taken root in front of our TVs to cheer on our athletes at the London Games and to marvel at the performances of the world's best.

Competitors from across our area have been on the world stage and all have acquitted themselves well -- as we knew they would.

You might remember the last time we talked I mentioned we might also see complete unknowns step up and give the performance of a lifetime -- and it happened to one Canadian athlete.

A high-jumper from the Sarnia-area who almost didn't make it onto the Canadian Olympic team came through with our first medal in the sport since 1976.

There's still talk about the loss of our womens soccer team to the US -- which is something for the powers-that-be in that sport to wrangle over now that the Games are finished

And if you think Americans are not a sportsmanlike bunch consider the words of a Detroit television sportscaster the day after that game.

He said if the same outcome had befallen the US team in the same way, the United States would probably invade Canada in retaliation.

One of the slogans we saw at the Olympic Games was "Inspire a Generation".

Athletes like Christine Sinclair, Derek Drouin, Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps -- and those who strove and fell short like Alexandre Despatie and Simon Whitfield  -- are among all those who have done just that.

I'm Peter Jackson.
