Have Fun But Stay Safe

We've all had a good chuckle in the past few days over a couple of articles.

One of them -- on MSN dot c-a's money page -- listed Owen Sound as the #1 place to retire in Canada.

While our conservation areas, local golf courses, and low-cost recreational activities helped give it the number one spot --- I have one other factor that makes Owen Sound "where you want to retire."

You can call Fred Wallace any day of the week with your lawn bowling score, and he'll be sure to get it on our website -- giving every local amateur athlete a moment of glory.

I know -- because he's done it for even me and my ball team.

Another reason the Scenic City is a top retirement community, is our Georgian Bay shoreline.

And that brings me to the second article that gave us a laugh this week.

Mountain Life Georgian Bay Magazine came out with a list of the top ten places around Georgian Bay to go skinny dipping.

Not surprisingly, the Grotto on the Bruce Peninsula topped the list, which also included MacKay Harbour in Lion's Head --- or just jumping off your own boat somewhere far away from prying eyes in our vast blue lake.

Talk about chilly.

Now you might have been reminded about the thrill involved in doing something so risque... but I do want to take a moment to address water safety.

Summer's not over yet -- and many kids and adults are still taking the opportunity to cool off in our lakes and rivers.

The number of drownings is up in Ontario already this summer, and just this past Tuesday there was another close call at Gobles Grove Beach in Port Elgin when two young girls were pulled out by the strong current on a raft.

They weren't wearing life jackets.

So remember to keep water safety in mind as we wind through the last official month of summer --- take life jackets, don't swim alone, keep an eye on the kids, and don't drink and boat.

I'm Daryl Morris.
