Enjoy Summer While You Can

Well, here we are on the cusp of that holiday weekend, smack dab in the middle of summer.

Now begins the traditional dog days of summer although there were several days in July that could have been termed dog days.

It's about this time that the kids start the annual tradition of "Mom, I've got nothing to do."

Well with a little help from you there are a ton of things to do in our communities.

Every weekend there's some kind of "Fest" or celebration going on and we must salute those volunteers who make these events possible.

The kids love 'em and it gets mom and dad out of the house as well.

But if that doesn't work, there are world-class parks to visit and explore.

Of course, there are the beaches that are second to none and I could go on and on about what is available in the area at a very economical cost.

We have to remember that people from the Big Smoke and environs travel for three hours and more in traffic jams just to get to the area that we call home.

It's a summer to take advantage of what our region has to offer.

Here's another way to keep it unique for the kids.

Have them do little odd jobs during the week for which they get paid and promise them that you'll go somewhere this weekend or the next one to spend their hard-earned money.

If there's a simple goal at the end of the tunnel, kids will usually shoot for it and while they're working at those odd jobs, give them something to look forward to.

It's just a thought and I'm well aware that there will be those little darlings who will whine and complain anyway because there's nothing to do.

OK then, take them shopping for back-to-school supplies and clothes.

That should shut them up real quick as they contemplate that school isn't that far off.

All of a sudden the dog days of summer are looking pretty good.

I'm John Divinski.
