Finding Balance In Work Life

The quest for people to find that so called life work balance is becoming increasingly difficult these days thanks to the advances made to mobile technology.

While mobile technology has made for some great strides in terms of worker productivity, not all those effects have been for the good.

The so called worker bees are being asked, and many times expected to continue their jobs even after they are safely home in the hive.

An online survey conducted in May by California-based software company Good Technology found that more than two thirds of respondents check their work email before 8 a.m., with the average first log-on coming at 7:09 in the morning.

Even more admitted that they don't go to sleep without first checking their work email.

I myself try to avoid checking work related email at home. In fact the unwritten rule is that the only time I  can check my e mail is before I head off to work in the morning.

That way I know what could be happening in the way of meetings or the like.

The temptation I admit  is quite strong to hop on the computer and see what's happening, but I remain off line while at home.

I know that does not fit the image of the modern on line plugged in constantly in touch employee, but I guess I am just an old fashioned kind of guy.

If I am desperately needed after hours, there is that old fashioned invention of Mr. Bell's that is just sitting there.

This move of mine is something that is being picked up on by several large international corporations.

In 2011, German automaker Volkswagen decided to block e mails from company issued smart phones 30 minutes after workers shifts ended and the phones only became unblocked when the next shift begins.

Last time I check, Volkswagen was still doing pretty well despite blocking company emails to workers.
