Making Sense Of Theatre Massacre

It was about this time last week when we were starting to hear details of that horrific shooting at a theatre in Aurora, Colorado

I couldn't believe what I was hearing...

A man walked into the premiere midnight screening of the new Batman movie and launched tear gas before firing his guns -- yes more than one -- into the crowd.

12 people were killed and 58 others were injured.

The first thing that came to mind was where are we safe in this world if we can't even go to a movie theatre without before victimized by gun violence.

The second thing that came to mind was who would do such a thing.

Well, I talked to psychiatrist Doctor Paul Wong this week -- looking to make sense of such a horrific crime -- and his conclusion made some sense.

Doctor Wong suggested we put too much emphasis on our personal success in life that we don't think about other people.

It got me thinking about what's important to me and how I measure success.

Is it my job?

Is it the amount of money I make?

Is it my family?

I'm glad my only "yes" answer was to the third question.

Doctor Wong suggests if you put too much emphasis on materials for your personal success -- then you are setting yourself up for deep depression if you fail -- and that depression could lead to anger.

I don't think this was the sole factor in the Colorado shooting massacre.

How a 24 year old was able to own so many guns and incendiary devices and purchase six thousand rounds of ammunition on the internet are major factors.

But From Where I Sit, I think Doctor Wong has some good advice.

We need more compassion for each other and less violence in this world.
