Let's Enjoy The Olympics

The countdown continues to the Olympic Games which open in London, England on Friday.

Understandably there isn't the hoopla in Canada surrounding these games as there was when we welcomed the world to Vancouver for the Winter Olympics two years ago.

That doesn't mean to say we won't be keeping an eye on what's going on across the pond -- far from it.

I'm an unabashed Olympics fan and I'll be glued to my TV cheering on the red and white.

Canada is sending 277 athletes to London and some of them are good bets to win medals.

Some of them are from right here in our own backyard.

Will we do as well as we did in Vancouver?

Maybe.

You never know what can happen and the hope is always there for a breakthrough performance by someone we're completely unfamiliar with before the Games begin.

We're investing more in our competitors than ever before through programs like Own the Podium and it's paying off.

The success of Canadian competitors however is about much more than just medals.

Not only are our athletes adding to our prestige on the international stage but their feats are inspiring a generation of young people to be stronger, higher and faster than those who have gone before them.

Records are made to be broken and medals to be won but let's also enjoy the games for what they are -- hopefully peaceful international competition.

I'm Peter Jackson.
