News Sources Are Changing

Where do you get your news from......Radio, TV, Newspapers or the Internet.

If you answered the Internet you would be among a growing number of people who turn to the world wide web to get their information, especially when it concerns breaking news like a natural or man made disaster.

That is the last finding from the US based Pew Research Centre Project for Excellence in Journalism.

The study found that  worldwide You Tube is becoming a major platform for viewing news.
Some of the other findings of the research showed the most popular news videos tended to depict natural disasters or political upheaval-usually featuring intense visuals.

At any given time, breaking news videos can outpace even the biggest entertainment videos.

Citizens play a substantial role in supplying and producing footage and The most popular news videos are a mix of edited and raw footage.

Another finding was that Personalities are not a main driver of the top news videos.

However the study also found there some ethical issues that are not being dealt with by those posting news videos on YouTube.

Standards have not developed on how to attribute the video content.

News organizations sometimes post content that was apparently captured by citizen eyewitnesses without any clear attribution as to the original producer.

The study also points out,Citizens are posting copyrighted material without permission and the creator of some material cannot be identified.

All this creates the potential for news to be manufactured, or even falsified, without giving audiences much ability to know who produced it or how to verify it.

So for news junkies who are consuming much of their information from YouTube videos...caution should be the watchword of the day.

Because sometimes what they may be looking at under the pretence of news -- maybe just the opposite.
