Everyone Should Wear A Helmet

Last week on the news I read a couple of stories about a report by the Ontario coroner’s office, that said almost 75 per cent of 129 bicyclists killed in Ontario from 2006 to 2010 weren't wearing helmets.

According to Deputy Coroner Dan Cass -- Helmet use by all cyclists can and will decrease fatal head injuries.

Mandatory bike helmets are not a new idea.  It's been law in Ontario for cyclists under 18 since 1995.   What surprises me is there is not the same law for those over 18.

I had the unpleasant experience of coming unglued from my motorcycle in the late 1960’s and slapped a helmet on my noggin’ every ride ever since, it wasn't mandatory then it just made good sense.

It still does.

And yet, incredibly, some cyclists complain mandatory helmets will deprive them of their “rights, I certainly heard that argument about motorcycle helmets and I heard that same stupid argument from motorists who didn't want to wear seat belts when that became law in this province in mid 70’s.

In any accident between a driver of a motorcycle, a bicycle, a scooter or a pedestrian, regardless of who had the so called right of way, cars and trucks always win that argument.

So this summer please remember there is no substitute for attentiveness, patience, good judgment and common sense on our roads.

I'm Dan McLean and From Where I Sit - mandatory bike helmets are a no-brainer.

Just look at the lives that would be saved, the cost of health care associated with these accidents and the terrible toll on families who lose a loved one to a senseless accident.

Responsible cyclists know better but since many aren't, maybe is time we had laws and penalties with consequences the same as those who don't wear seatbelts, baby safety seats or motorcycle helmets.

This is something I could applaud our government for, something our legislators haven't heard too much of lately.
