Commentary
June 24, 2010 Little slips of paper are spilling out of my darts and laurels drawer…it’s time to empty it. Here’s some laurels to get started. One for the Chartwell Senior Star competition which takes place in communities all over Canada. In its second year in Owen Sound it moved to the Roxy Theatre with nearly a full house to enjoy a great concert by some of the youngest looking, most energetic seniors you’ll ever meet. This laurel is for the organizers of Dancing for Life, a cancer fund raiser built around performances by local dance students and local celebrities who are some of the most energetic dancers you’ll ever meet. What I liked best about this event…not only did some of the funds go to support community living, a good contingent of community living clients learned some routines and man, can they dance! And here’s another laurel for the Community Foundation Grey Bruce. When I was chair back in the 90s our goal was to build the endowment fund to half a million dollars. This week, as they gave out nearly 100-thousand dollars in grants to a wide variety of organizations throughout the region they projected the fund could reach 10-million dollars in three short years. Awesome! Of course, I have a few darts and this one is for the bureaucratic club being held over Owen Sound’s head because of the extra time it needs to build the new recreation complex. Why do governments think it’s more important to spend money fast than to spend it wisely? Another dart is aimed at a report received by Meaford Council calling for a board of governors to replace the general manager at Meaford Hall. There have been five sold out performances in the past five months and 12 community based performances last year. I know what would happen to Bayshore Broadcasting if it was run by a board of governors! Our last two darts are for drivers taking an awful risk by crossing double lines into the passing lane on Highway 26 west of Woodford, as well as for the drivers who hog that passing lane. Sooner or later, they’re going to meet each other in a way neither planned!
